Umuoji community in Idemmili North Local Government Area of Anambra State was thrown into tension today as villagers staged a peaceful protest demanding constitutional amendments to the process of electing their President-General (PG).
The protesters accused the current leadership of manipulating the electoral system in favor of the PG and his executives. According to them, the present arrangement gives the PG the power to handpick delegates while each village is allowed only two votes a structure they described as “undemocratic and unfair.”
Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the demonstrators called for a shift to a “one man, one woman, one vote” system, which they believe would guarantee transparency, fairness, and genuine representation in community governance.
They further alleged that the PG and his team were rushing to conduct a fresh election to remain in office against the will of the people. Other grievances raised include accusations of indiscriminate land sales, imposition of heavy taxes, and lack of accountability in community funds.
The protesters vowed to sustain their agitation until their voices are heard and a proper electoral reform is instituted in the Umuoji community constitution.
