Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has renewed his call for comprehensive reforms of Nigeria’s emergency response facilities following a fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
Obi made the call on January 20 during a visit to the market, where he commiserated with traders who lost goods worth millions of naira in the incident. He described the losses as particularly devastating at a time when many Nigerians are battling worsening economic hardship and rising poverty.
According to Obi, the traders narrated their experiences and the circumstances surrounding the fire, stressing the urgent need for more efficient and responsive emergency services across the country. He praised the traders for their resilience and assured them that with the right support, they would recover from the setback and rebuild their businesses.
“This incident once again highlights the importance of investing in efficient, well-coordinated emergency response systems,” Obi said. “A nation that truly cares for its people must ensure that emergency services respond promptly and effectively to crises in order to save lives and livelihoods.”
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that many tragedies in Nigeria are preventable if institutions function properly and are adequately equipped.
Obi was accompanied during the visit by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) AMAC Chairmanship candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, as part of ongoing political engagements ahead of the February 21, 2026 council elections.
Reiterating his long-held position on governance and institutional reform, Obi stated that Nigeria must work towards a future where preventable disasters are avoided and public institutions serve the people efficiently.
“A New Nigeria is possible,” he added.
