Former presidential candidate of the labour party, Peter Obi, has declared that Nigerians must ensure their votes count in the 2027 general elections, warning that any attempt to undermine the democratic process will face legal consequences.
Obi made the statement while addressing supporters, stressing that the era of electoral manipulation must come to an end. According to him, unlike in the past, the 2027 elections must reflect the true will of the people.
“Our votes must count,” Obi said. “All those who are there not to count the votes will be counted among those destroying Nigeria.”
He urged citizens to remain at their polling units after casting their ballots to monitor the counting and transmission of results. Obi emphasized that civic vigilance is key to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
“I encourage everyone to remain at the polling units after voting to count and witness the counting and transmission of results,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor warned that individuals who attempt to manipulate the electoral process would be held accountable under the law. He reiterated that those who refuse to allow votes to count would be regarded as enemies of democracy and Nigeria’s future.
“Those who refuse to allow the votes count will be made to count the full weight of the law against rigging,” Obi added. “If you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law.”
His remarks come amid growing political conversations and early mobilization ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various stakeholders calling for electoral reforms and greater transparency in the voting process.
