The Nigerian Red Cross Society has expressed sorrow over the disaster that struck Niger State in the early hours of Thursday, May 29, leaving at least 21 people dead, scores missing, and a community reeling in shock.
Recent updates placed the death toll at over 100 with many still missing.
In a statement released on Friday, the Red Cross described the development as heartbreaking.
“The Nigerian Red Cross Society expresses deep sorrow over the devastating flooding that struck Kpege-Mokwa in Mokwa Local Government Area, Niger State, in the early hours of May 29, 2025.
“Heavy rainfall began around 3am while many residents were asleep, resulting in significant loss of life and widespread distress,” the statement read.
The Red Cross confirmed that 21 bodies have been recovered from the floodwaters, but warned that the toll could rise as search and rescue operations remain ongoing.
“Our volunteers are actively engaged on the ground, providing critical search and rescue assistance as well as first aid services to survivors,” the Red Cross said.
The organisation further emphasised its commitment to supporting government efforts.
“The Nigerian Red Cross remains committed to supporting the government through search and rescue efforts and reaching the affected communities with emergency relief.
“We will continue to coordinate with local authorities and partners to ensure timely and effective response,” it assured.
While expressing solidarity with the grieving families, the Red Cross extended a message of comfort and hope.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and continue to support the Nigerian government in aiding all those impacted by this accident,” it added
This disaster comes against the backdrop of recurring flood events in Niger State, where communities like Mokwa are increasingly vulnerable due to seasonal heavy rains, river overflows, and limited flood control infrastructure.
According to a PUNCH report last year, flooding incidents in Mokwa and other parts of Niger State displaced thousands and destroyed homes, farms, and livelihoods, highlighting a persistent crisis in Nigeria’s flood-prone regions.
Residents in Kpege-Mokwa have been left traumatised.
“The water rose so fast, we barely had time to escape. We lost everything,” lamented Aisha Mohammed, a mother of three who survived the flood but is still searching for her missing husband.
President Bola Tinubu, in a statement released on Thursday, described the incident as “a national tragedy” and ordered emergency agencies to mobilise swiftly.
“We must do everything in our power to assist the victims and prevent further loss of life,” the President said.
