Politics Made Me Poorer, I Was Far Richer Before Joining Politics – Peter Obi

Peter Obi

Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has revealed that his greatest regret in life may be joining politics, as the experience made him financially poorer rather than wealthier.

Speaking in a recent interview, Obi stated that contrary to popular belief that politics is a quick route to wealth, his personal experience has been the opposite. According to him, he was far richer before venturing into public service.

I have no regrets. The only regret I may ever have in life is joining politics. It made me poorer. I was far richer before politics came,” Obi said.

The former governor explained that he entered politics out of a deep desire to serve and improve governance standards, not for personal enrichment. He noted that the current political culture in Nigeria often rewards corruption and mediocrity, while punishing honesty and integrity.

In Nigeria, when you tell the truth or try to manage resources prudently, they see you as a problem. But if you mismanage public funds, they hail you. That is part of the reason our country is where it is today,” he added.
