Poverty, Inequality, Hate Speech Driving Bloodshed in Nigeria – Tony Ojukwu

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has stated that addressing poverty, inequality, and hate speech is critical to ending bloodshed in Nigeria.

Ojukwu made the call while reacting to ongoing violence across parts of the country, stressing that insecurity is deeply rooted in social and economic injustice.

According to him, failure to tackle widespread poverty and marginalisation continues to fuel grievances and violent conflicts, while unchecked hate speech further escalates tensions among communities.

He urged the Federal Government to adopt a holistic approach, combining security measures with policies that promote equity, inclusion, and human rights protection.

Ojukwu also emphasised the need for stronger regulation of inflammatory rhetoric, warning that divisive narratives can worsen instability if left unchecked.

The remarks come amid renewed concerns over persistent violence and insecurity in different parts of Nigeria.
