Professor Yemi George, a renowned Professor of Public Law and President of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, has cautioned against calls to increase the number of justices in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Speaking on Monday, George argued that expanding the court will not solve the problem of delays in the justice system, as some have suggested. Instead, he warned that adding more justices may compromise the quality of the bench.
“This is not a numbers problem; it’s about making the system efficient,” he said. “Increasing the number might lead to situations where less qualified people find their way into the court, which will endanger the justice system.”
He urged stakeholders to focus on improving institutional efficiency rather than pursuing structural expansion.
