Randy Peterz Warns INEC Against ‘Political Manipulation’ Ahead of 2027 Elections

A public affairs commentator, Randy Peterz, has cautioned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, against actions that could trigger a political crisis in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a strongly worded statement, Peterz alleged that there is mounting pressure on the INEC leadership to take decisions that may undermine electoral integrity and fairness.

He warned that yielding to such pressure could deepen existing national tensions, especially at a time when parts of the country, including Jos, are already grappling with security challenges.

“Do not allow yourself to be used as a catalyst for a political crisis in Nigeria,” Peterz stated, adding that Nigerians would also rise to demand accountability and adherence to due process.

His remarks come in response to INEC’s recent announcement of plans to conduct a nationwide voter revalidation exercise. According to the commission, the move is aimed at improving the credibility of the voter register ahead of future elections.

INEC explained that the exercise will focus on removing duplicate entries and errors, ensuring that only eligible voters remain on the register, and updating voter records in preparation for upcoming electoral cycles.

However, Peterz expressed concerns that such an exercise, if not transparently handled, could be manipulated to weaken opposition parties and distort the democratic process.

He further stressed that any attempt to compromise electoral fairness would not be accepted by Nigerians, urging the commission to maintain neutrality and uphold the rule of law.
