Seventeen additional worshippers abducted from the ECWA Church in Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu have been released by their kidnappers following sustained negotiations with their captors.
The Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu Development Association disclosed this to journalists, adding that the association worked alongside the affected families to secure their release.
The latest release has brought renewed hope to the community, although it came at a high financial cost. Community sources described the process as involving the “painful sacrifice of huge resources.”
The abduction occurred on 14 December 2025, when over 30 parishioners were taken from the ECWA Church in Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu. Since then, community leaders and families have engaged in continuous efforts to secure the victims’ freedom.
On 1 January 2026, seven abductees were released after prolonged negotiations and the payment of ₦15 million. Of the seven, four were released alive, while three were confirmed dead—two before their release and one after being taken to the hospital.
Negotiations continued, leading to the release of three more victims on Monday, 12 December 2026, and a further 14 victims on Tuesday, 13 December 2026.
With these developments, a total of 24 worshippers have now been released, while 13 victims remain in captivity.
