Rivers Crisis: Senator Olaka Nwogu Claims Fubara Promised Not to Seek Re-Election at Peace Meeting

Olaka Nwogu and Fubara

Senator Olaka Nwogu has stated that he was present at the peace meeting where Governor Siminalayi Fubara agreed not to seek re-election in 2027

In an interview with Channels Television, Nwogu said he personally heard Governor Fubara say clearly that he would not have any interest in running for a second term. He said Fubara’s promise not to seek re-election was the major reason why a political solution was reached at the time.

In Nwogu’s words: “I can tell you as somebody who was at that meeting I heard him say clearly (sic), because after the meeting with the State Assembly and also with some elders, based on the prevailing circumstance at that time, he came up and he said clearly, ‘I shall have no interest in any further election, I shall not run again’. And they were part of the basis for which a political solution was reached in the state”
