Nigerian televangelist and Senior Pastor of Jesus Dominion International, Timothy Omotoso, has been rearrested by the South African Police Service on Saturday morning.
Omotoso was rearrested in a church at Commissioner Street, East London, South Africa, where he was supposed to preach.
He was rearrested a month after he was discharged and acquitted of rape, human trafficking and racketeering charges that had been ongoing since 2017.
Akelicious had earlier reported that the 66-year-old and his co-defendants, Lusanda Sulami and Zukiswa Sitho, were freed by the Gqeberha High Court, Eastern Cape, on April 02, 2025.
The presiding judge, Irma Schoeman, ruled that Omotoso was not guilty because his prosecutors mishandled the case.
The judgment was protested by most South Africans and some of the country’s agencies, saying that his acquittal was an “assault on the fight against gender-based violence.”
However, a South-African-based online publication, Daily Maverick, reported that the Nigerian preacher was arrested again based on immigration charges.
The National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed that Omotoso was apprehended.
According to the report, the National Intervention Unit and the Tactical Response Team arrested him at 5 AM on Saturday “just after church.”
He will be facing charges relating to the violation of the Immigration Act and appear in court on Monday (tomorrow).
