Imo State government yesterday accused Senator Samuel Anyanwu of malice and mischief regarding how the administration is handling the payment of workers salaries.
Anyanwu had alleged in a statement by his media office that the government was busy constructing roads to the detriment of payment of salaries.
But Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba said the former Senator should get his facts right before commenting on issues that are beyond his competence.
He said as a man who once aspired to govern the state, Senator Anyanwu should thoroughly investigate an issue before rushing to the press only to end up embarrassing himself.
The statement insisted that if Sen Anyanwu was not steamed in opposition paranoid ,he ought to know that the government was not actually indebted to any of its valid staff.
” If the senator was not actuated by malice and mischief to parrot the propaganda of the opposition, he ought to have verified his facts before making such a weighty, yet baseless allegation”, Emelumba averred.
The commissioner disclosed that as at the end of March this year, the government had paid 39, 795 of the total workforce of 40,722.
Only 927 workers out of this total, are having issues with their salaries because they have account number reletated issues, adding however that most of them have been resolved.
According to him, Sen Anyanwu, if he was truly interested in workers welfare, would have joined other patriotic Imo citizens that desire to know the status of salary payments in the state, to visit the government’s website,at: payroll. Imostate. gov.ng, which is public knowledge, instead of recycling rumours fuelled by detractors of the government.
On Anyanwu’s allegation that the government was slashing salaries, the commissioner said it was yet another fallacy borne out of pitiable ignorance, statating categorically that the government has never slashed any workers salary.
“The truth is that inspite of the fact that the last promotion exercise in Imo State public service was in 2014, some workers, colluding with Accounts people embarked on self promotion. No responsible government will condone such illegality. Naturally, those who indulged in such illegality had to be reverted to their legitimate salaries. Obviously this is what Anyanwu mistakes for cutting of salaries, which is unfortunate, coming from a former Senator who should know better ” Emelumba declared
He said it was regrettable that Senator Anyanwu lent himself to be a peddler of rumours and in the process deceiving unsuspecting members of the public.
” How can the same man who has acknowledged the massive road revolution in imo State turn around to condemn it in another breath just to score cheap political point?”,he asked.
Emelumba was however happy that even the blind in the state can see that Governor Hope Uzodinma has beaten all developmental records in one year including the automation of the payroll.
He insisted that the government has been up to date in the payment of salaries of workers, and pledged that the administration would continue to pay equal attention to all sectors of the state.
