
The Senate has expressed its displeasure that the agreement between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities is yet to be implemented.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tetfund, Senator Muntari Dandutse conveyed the feelings while presenting the resolution of the Committee with the leadership of the Academic Union in Abuja on Friday.
He stated that the committee agreed to conveyed a meeting between the government agencies and Asuu, most especially, the Ministry of Education and Nigeria University Commission on the ongoing negotiation as soon as possible in order to resolve the lingering problem.
The Senate equally agreed to meet with the Minister of the FCT, to ensure the return of the University of Abuja landed property taken over from them.
On his part, a member of the Committee, Senator Adams Oshiomole, Commended the Academic Union for its doggedness and agreed with them on the need for reversal of the Tax on Books among others promising that the committee will interface with government on this
The Committee implored the Academic Staff Union to go back to work while the conversation on their demands is ongoing stressing that this does not mean their demands had been jettisoned.
Speaking earlier, the National President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, charged the Senate to assist in increasing funding to Universities adding that this would improve the nature and Quality of Research being carried out.
He challenged the Senate to push Government to increase funding in the universities and will see if there will be strike again.
The National President of Asuu restated the Commitment of his members to remain in the country and contribute to national Development.
