The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly launched strategic airstrikes against elements linked to the recently foiled military coup in the Benin Republic, according to multiple security sources who spoke with Akelicious.
Sources familiar with the operation said the strikes targeted coup plotters and their equipment as they attempted to flee Cotonou in armoured vehicles following the rapid intervention of loyalist Beninese forces.
According to the insiders, the air operations conducted within the last 30 minutes featured multiple coordinated precision strikes executed by Nigerian fighter jets operating within Benin’s airspace.
The operation was meticulously planned and executed. Our objectives were clear: neutralize fleeing hostile elements, prevent regrouping, and restore stability in coordination with regional partners,” one security source stated.
The sources added that the operation was carried out with the consent of Beninese authorities and in adherence to international military protocols, emphasizing efforts to minimize civilian casualties while maximizing operational effectiveness.
Eyewitnesses in Cotonou reported hearing multiple explosions in several strategic areas, consistent with air-to-ground strikes. According to the security sources, the bombardment neutralized several fleeing insurgents, destroyed the armoured vehicles in their convoy, and cut off escape routes used by the coup loyalists.
The air intervention follows the failed takeover allegedly led by Lt. Pascal Tigri, who briefly attempted to dissolve state institutions and assume military control of the Benin Republic. Following the thwarting of the coup, several insurgent elements reportedly attempted to escape southward, triggering the Nigerian response.
A senior military official, speaking anonymously, said:
The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to safeguarding regional security and supporting the sovereignty of neighbouring states. Our operations are intelligence-driven, precise, and aimed at preventing any spillover that could threaten our borders.”
