Electricity supply to the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa was cut off on Monday over outstanding utility bills owed to the City of Tshwane.
Nasiphi Moya, Executive Mayor of Tshwane, disclosed the development in a post on X, stating that the mission’s power was disconnected due to unpaid service charges.
“#TshwaneYaTima: We’ve disconnected electricity at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They owe the city for utility services,” she wrote, sharing a photo of the commission building.
The incident comes at a time when many Nigerian embassies and high commissions around the world have been operating without ambassadors since President Bola Tinubu took office. Although new ambassadorial appointments have recently been announced, most of the appointees have yet to assume their posts.
