Sowore Meets Jonathan in Abuja, Pushes for Nnamdi Kanu’s Immediate Release

Sowore Meets Jonathan,

Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, met earlier today in Abuja with former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to discuss the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement released via his social media handles, Sowore disclosed that the meeting centered on finding a just and peaceful resolution to Kanu’s prolonged incarceration. He revealed that former President Jonathan agreed there was an “urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly.”

I thank him sincerely for recognizing the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing,” Sowore said.

According to him, Jonathan also assured that he would meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu soon to further discuss the issue.

Sowore noted that with Jonathan’s commitment, the former President has joined a growing list of eminent Nigerians who have publicly called for justice and the release of Nnamdi Kanu. The list includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani, among others across political and regional divides.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention today because he took up the just cause of confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria. Like other ethnic and regional activists whose politically motivated cases have been withdrawn or dismissed, Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without further delay,” Sowore emphasized.

The AAC leader further called on political, cultural, and religious leaders especially from the South East to unite in the demand for Kanu’s unconditional release. He mentioned key figures including Peter Obi, Charles Soludo, Alex Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, Oby Ezekwesili, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide’s leadership to join the call.

Nnamdi Kanu should be set free. And I remain firmly committed to peacefully mobilizing for justice and freedom in this matter,” Sowore concluded.

The renewed call comes amid increasing pressure on the Federal Government to release the IPOB leader, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, despite several court rulings ordering his release.
