Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reaffirmed the cordial nature of Algeria’s relations with Sahel countries, despite occasional disagreements, particularly concerning the military rulers who have seized power in some of these nations.
Speaking during a meeting with civil society actors in Béchar, southwestern Algeria, Tebboune stated that Algeria remained open to welcoming workers from Sahel countries, especially to meet demands in the agricultural sector.
However, he emphasized that such migration must be conducted in an organized and legal manner, stressing the imperative of safeguarding Algeria’s national security.
“We are ready to welcome labour from our Sahelian brothers based on our local needs,” he said. “But this must be done legally and securely, to prevent any threats to our stability.”
The president noted that Algeria was closely monitoring security risks emanating from neighbouring countries where terrorist groups remain active. He warned against the potential exploitation of African labourers by terrorist networks, drug traffickers, and other criminal organizations.
“We must be vigilant against the infiltration of terrorism under the guise of migrant workers,” he cautioned.
Tebboune reassured that Algeria remained committed to assisting African nations once stability is restored in the Sahel region, reaffirming the government’s spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
Tensions with Niger
On the issue of strained relations with Niger, President Tebboune disclosed that the Nigerien authorities had deviated from agreements previously reached with Algeria, warning that they would bear the consequences of their actions.
He further reiterated Algeria’s strong opposition to any uncontrolled opening of its borders.
“Opening the borders to just anyone makes no sense,” Tebboune declared, quoting a proverb: “He who you think is Moses could turn out to be Pharaoh.”
The Algerian leader underlined that national sovereignty remains non-negotiable, describing it as a “red line.”
“Today, Algeria is envied for its stability and leadership role on the international stage,” he added, urging Algerians to defend their nation with pride and honour.
Drone Incident and Diplomatic Fallout
The recent tension with Sahel states follows an incident where Algeria reportedly shot down a reconnaissance drone within Malian territory, prompting a sharp response from the Alliance of Sahel States.
Following the incident, the alliance announced the recall of their ambassadors from Algeria, after Mali accused Algeria of downing a Malian drone.
It would be recalled that the Algerian Ministry of National Defence announced on April 1, 2025, that its forces had downed an armed drone which had violated Algerian airspace by penetrating two kilometres inside the country’s borders.
