Former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, has reportedly fled Nigeria amid ongoing investigations linking him to an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to credible insider sources, Sylva escaped through the creeks after receiving intelligence that the coup plot had been uncovered by security operatives. He is believed to have travelled first to Senegal and is now making arrangements to move to Argentina, where he allegedly maintains several business interests.
The former Bayelsa State governor is said to have been lobbying for the position of Nigeria’s Ambassador to Argentina prior to the unfolding events.
Sources within the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) disclosed that the first military officer arrested in connection with the coup attempt allegedly identified Sylva as the “arrowhead and financier” of the plot. Following this revelation, security agencies reportedly intensified surveillance on the former minister.
Further investigations have allegedly traced a sum of ₦46 billion to an account reportedly linked to Sylva. Operatives of the DIA subsequently raided his Abuja residence, where his brother, identified as Paga Sylva, was taken into custody for questioning.
This followed an earlier raid on his Bayelsa home, where incriminating materials and foreign currency were reportedly recovered.
Security agencies have neither confirmed nor denied the reports officially, but a senior intelligence officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the probe into the alleged coup financing network is “at an advanced stage.”
Efforts to reach Chief Timipre Sylva or his media aides for comments proved unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
