Tinubu Urges Media to Strengthen, Not Sabotage, Nigeria’s Democracy

President Bola Tinubu says freedom of expression must strengthen, not sabotage, Nigeria’s democracy, urging editors to wield their influence with fairness and national responsibility.

Speaking at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference held at the State House in Abuja, the President told media leaders that the integrity of public discourse remains central to the nation’s democratic survival, urged journalists to project Nigeria responsibly

Earlier, editors warned that democracy itself is under threat as Nigeria’s press continues to shrink under economic hardship.

The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors appealed to the Tinubu administration to support the industry through tax reliefs, grants, and access to low-interest loans saying many newsrooms are barely staying afloat and struggling to pay salaries.

Their appeal came as Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, who delivered the keynote address, reminded editors that they too share responsibility for the nation’s trust deficit, warning that editorial choices can either “heal or divide” the country ahead of 2027
