U.S Lawmaker, Riley Moore Dismisses Nigeria Breakup Talks, Warns Against Separatism

United States Congressman Riley Moore has said that calls for the division of Nigeria did not feature in any serious discussions during his recent engagements across the country, warning that separatist agitations would worsen insecurity and endanger Christians.

Moore, who recently travelled to Nigeria, said he held multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian government officials, church leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) to better understand the persecution of Christians and the broader security crisis.

According to the lawmaker, proposals to divide Nigeria would only embolden terrorists and further destabilise the country, making Christians—particularly in the North and Middle Belt—more vulnerable to attacks.

“A destabilized Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” Moore said.

He stressed that efforts to encourage separatist movements ultimately harm the very communities they claim to protect, noting that instability fuels extremist violence rather than curbing it.

Moore reaffirmed his commitment to working towards the protection of persecuted Christians and all Nigerians affected by terrorism and insecurity, adding that saving lives remains his primary focus.

The congressman also welcomed the newly signed security cooperation agreement between the United States and Nigeria, describing it as a critical step toward addressing violence and strengthening bilateral ties between both countries.

“The US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement, and that is an important step in tackling the violence in Nigeria and deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship between our great nations,” he said.

He concluded by offering prayers for peace and stability in Nigeria, saying efforts must remain focused on unity and collective action against terrorism.
