The United States has canceled more than 100,000 visas since President Donald Trump assumed office on an anti-migrant platform, marking a record high for a single year, according to the State Department.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the administration prioritizes protecting American citizens and defending national sovereignty. Since Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025, the number of revoked visas is more than double the total from 2024 under President Joe Biden. Many of these cancellations were linked to cr+minal offenses, ranging from a+sa¥lt to driving under the influence.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also highlighted visa revocations for students who protested against Israel, invoking a McCarthy-era law that allows the US to block entry for foreigners considered contrary to its foreign policy, though some of these cases were later overturned in court. In total, around 8,000 revoked visas involved students.

The Trump administration has further tightened visa screenings, including monitoring applicants’ social media activity. These visa actions form part of a larger crackdown on immigration, with the Department of Homeland Security reporting that more than 605,000 people were deported last month, while 2.5 million others left the US voluntarily.

The State Department emphasized that the administration’s measures are part of a broader strategy to enforce immigration laws and safeguard American interests.
