The Nigeria Police Force, Anambra State Police Command, has ordered the detention of six police officers allegedly involved in a viral case of police extortion in Onitsha.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, who confirmed that the officers will remain in custody pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the incident captured in a widely circulated complaint video.
According to the command, the detained officers include two Assistant Superintendents of Police and four Inspectors who were allegedly involved in the incident.
In addition to the detention, senior officers linked to the matter have been formally queried, while statements have been obtained from other officers under caution in line with established police investigative procedures.
The police command also disclosed that steps have been initiated to arrest a Point-of-Sale (POS) operator in Onitsha, whose alleged involvement in the incident suggests a possible conspiracy.
Meanwhile, through the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpoko, authorities have invited the victim featured in the complaint video to come forward and provide additional testimony to aid the investigation and guide further disciplinary actions.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga assured the public that the command is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves and promised that further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
