A coalition of major youth organisations under the Nigerian Youth Unions’ Government (NYUG) has declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent defence sector decisions, while urging further reforms in national security leadership.
The position was made public during a press conference held on December 5, 2025, in Abuja, attended by groups including the Emerging Leaders Forum of Nigeria, Arewa Youth Federation, Igbo Youth Council, Oduduwa Youth Parliament, Niger-Delta Youth Front, Youth Assembly of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Students, and the North Central Youth Congress.
In a statement signed by Hon. Godstime Chukwubuikem Samuel, NYUG commended President Tinubu for appointing a “military veteran with combat experience” as Minister of Defence and for retaining Dr. Bello Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence despite “calumny by opposition actors.”
The coalition described the combination of Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd.) and Dr. Matawalle at the Defence Ministry as “highly commendable,” noting that their experience positions them to drive security reforms effectively.
NYUG further praised President Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial appointments, describing them as an effort to strengthen Nigeria’s global partnerships for economic and security advancement.
However, the coalition urged the President to replace the National Security Adviser with an individual from the military or intelligence community, preferably from the DIA, NIA, or DSS. It argued that national security operations are better aligned with leadership drawn from such backgrounds.
The youth bodies also called for an investigation into internal issues within the Nigeria Police Force, insisting that if the Inspector-General of Police is “due for change,” he should step aside for more vibrant leadership capable of introducing fresh ideas.
They further urged the Federal Government to hold state governors accountable for persistent insecurity and to consider declaring a state of emergency in any state where criminal activities continue unabated.
NYUG also advised President Tinubu to appoint a Senior Special Assistant on Youth and Talent Development to enhance youth engagement and national cohesion.
The statement concluded with a renewed pledge of support for the President’s efforts toward unity, justice, and national development.
