Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson has etched his name into Nigerian sporting history after winning the country’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships.
The 16-year-old produced a stunning performance in the men’s U-23 epee event at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Lagos, defeating India’s Asian champion, Lokesh Vemani, 15–5 in the final on Sunday to claim the gold medal.
The historic victory marks a major milestone for Nigerian fencing, with Esiovwa-Thompson becoming not only the first Nigerian to win a medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships, but also the first Nigerian to win gold at an international fencing event.
Competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, the teenager delivered a dominant run to the final, defeating three Indian opponents along the way and sending the home crowd into wild celebration.
India’s Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya took the bronze medals.
Esiovwa-Thompson’s route to the title was commanding. Starting in Pool 4, he went unbeaten to top his group and earned a bye into the round of 16.
He then defeated South Africa’s Karabo Mathobela 15–7 before overwhelming India’s Shivaansh Kapoor 15–2 in the quarter-final.
In the semi-final, Esiovwa-Thompson faced a tougher challenge against Ashwini Shaurya but held his nerve to secure a 15–11 victory, setting up a final clash with Vemani.
His breakthrough in Lagos is the latest chapter in a promising young career. Before switching allegiance to Nigeria, Esiovwa-Thompson had already enjoyed international success while representing England, winning gold in the U-13 boys’ epee at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge and bronze in the cadet men’s epee team event in Naples.
Elsewhere at the championships, England’s Oliver Strange claimed the tournament’s first gold medal after defeating India’s Manoj Patil in the men’s U-23 foil final. India’s Singh Sanasam and England’s Thomas James won the bronze medals.
