Salihu Moh Lukman, a chieftain of the ruling of All Progressives Congress (APC), has revealed why speculations has risen over the alleged plan by former president Goodluck Jonathan to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akelicious reports that Lukman said the PDP’s failure to recognise and appreciate Jonathan has been cited as reason for his speculated plan to dump the opposition party for the APC.
It was gathered that Lukman, who is the director-general, APC Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), however, warned that Jonathan should not be tied to only contesting the 2023 presidential election.
The APC chieftain described Jonathan’s possible defection to the APC as a big gamble, saying that the ex-president can serve well in the capacity of a member of yet to be constituted APC Board of Trustees (BoT).
He said:“Part of the reason high-profile membership recruitments by political parties in Nigeria attract a lot of debate, attention, and controversy, is that it hardly come without any ambition to contest election by those joining the party.
“Although in the case of Fani-Kayode, no one can associate it with the ambition to contest election, which is why many questioned his electoral value, with 2023 elections less than two years away, and with the APC leadership efficiently succeeding to win so many high-profile leaders joining the party, there has been lots of speculation in terms of what all the high-profile membership recruitment into APC represent.
Partly because President Muhammadu Buhari will be completing his second term and therefore ineligible to contest, the question of who will emerge as the presidential candidate of the APC for 2023 is quite open.”
Similarly, an unnamed All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain has claimed that the northern oligarchy wants ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 because the Bayelsa-born politician can only serve four years in power if he returns.
Goodluck Jonathan, 63, held away as Nigeria’s leader from 2010 to 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after his then-boss,Umaru Musa Yar’Adua died in office.
Speaking on the issue, an APC chieftain who spoke to Daily Sun newspaper on the condition of anonymity, said:
“Some top members of APC majorly of northern extraction actually started the move to lure Jonathan into the party based on their selfish reasons and I can confirm to you that they’ve really gone very far into the deal.
Part of the plot to settle for him is that the odd will Favour them since he has only a term to serve.
“They’ve perfected arrangements to ensure that one of them becomes Jonathan’s vice preparatory to taking over from him if he finishes his remaining term. This move is purely a northern affair and they’re not relenting about it regardless of the effect it will have on the party.
“Those opting for him forgot that Jonathan’s return has a constitutional lacuna where a section has a proviso that he cannot be sworn in as president for more than two times.
“If APC issues Jonathan presidential ticket, the party is running a big risk due to that lacuna unless there is an amendment of the constitution at the National Assembly.”
Meanwhile, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker has given his own opinion concerning president Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.
