COP stands for “Conference of the Parties”, where the “parties” are the countries that signed up to the original UN climate agreement in 1992.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and it is held annually.
Each COP focuses on discussing and negotiating international climate policies and actions.
On Sunday, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun landed in Dubai for the COP 28 where he delivered a compelling speech outlining the significant strides to be made by the Nigeria Police Force in environmental sustainability through the Nigeria Police Green Initiatives (NPGI).
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who was part of the delegation, said that the motivating motto, “Saving People with Environment,” underscores the Police Force’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and fostering sustainable practices.
The core mission of Nigeria Police Green Initiatives aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and contribute to a more environmentally friendly society.
The IGP emphasized the crucial role law enforcement plays in ensuring a safer and more sustainable future and called for collective support to address climate challenges.
Recognizing the global shift towards sustainable energy, the IGP highlighted the Police Force’s active involvement in facilitating energy transition initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint.
As part of a key developmental strategy, the IGP announced initiatives such as tree planting in all Police commands and formations, using gas to drive Police patrol vans, a continuous campaign for renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria, and a strategic approach to light up communities and police stations aims to create well-lit and secure environments, contributing to a reduction in crime rates and fostering community development.
The government, business community, media, civil society, and multilateral organizations are among the stakeholders involved when the world unites to take action toward accomplishing a shared objective and give cooperative solutions to an enduring global issue.
The parties to the convention represent a range of viewpoints and advocate for different mitigating measures. These individuals are coming together to further their distinct agendas and interests from governments, corporations, and civil society.
There are several advantages for the Nigeria Police Force attending COP23 in Dubai:
1. Knowledge sharing: Attending COP23 provides an opportunity for the Nigeria Police Force to gain knowledge and insights into international best practices in addressing climate change. They will learn about innovative approaches, technologies, and policies that other countries have implemented, which will
then be adapted and applied in Nigeria.
2. Capacity building: COP23 offers various seminars, workshops, and training sessions where law enforcement agencies will enhance their understanding of climate change and its impacts on security and public safety. This capacity building will help the Nigeria Police Force develop effective strategies and protocols for dealing with climate-related challenges within the country.
3. Networking: Attending COP23 allows the Nigeria Police Force to connect and collaborate with law enforcement agencies from around the world.
