According to Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, if Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, were from China, he would have faced severe consequences for his alleged misappropriation of funds.

Onanuga made these remarks in response to the findings of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities, Chargeable Offences report, which accused Emefiele of opening unauthorized bank accounts and depositing large sums of money in foreign banks without approval.

In particular, Emefiele was said to have lodged billions of naira in 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China, including £543,482,213 in UK fixed deposits without authorization.

Posting on X, Onanuga wrote: “If Godwin Emefiele and his gang had committed these egregious misappropriations in China, they will by now be facing the firing squad for high treason.”
