Plateau Massacre: “Why Nigerians can’t be allowed to own firearms” – Army Chief

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has explained why Nigerians cannot be allowed to carry arms to defend themselves amid rising attacks by bandits and terrorists.

Lagbaja said self-defense under the guise of the recent attacks on communities in Plateau state amounts to “anarchy”.

The COAS stated this in an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, following reports that over 195 persons were killed during midnight assault by terrorists in the North-Central state.

According to the Army Chief; “I do not support that. I think that is a call for anarchy.”

He stated that the Nigerian Army is capable of defending the country and as such, there is no need for self-defence. He also said as part of efforts to bolster security in the Plateau, more troops are being deployed to the area.

Lagbaja said; “I have reeled out our plans for 2024 for Plateau State. The troops that we are deploying to Plateau, are on their way to Plateau now.

“This night or first light tomorrow, they should be on the Plateau. We are sending more equipment to enhance the efficiency of the troops.”
