Governments all over the world, especially in Nigeria, have been urged to always prioritize the welfare of their workers as they are the backbone of society.

The Ìgwè elect of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, made this known on Wednesday through his commendation message to workers all over the world on this year’s International Workers’ Day celebration.

He stated that neglecting the well-being of workers undermines the very foundation upon which nations are built.

Chief Ogbonna emphasized the critical role played by workers in sustaining societal progress, highlighting their dedication, resilience, and indispensable contributions to economic growth and social stability; urging governments to prioritize policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of workers.

He further implored employers to foster an environment of inclusivity and respect within the workplace, ensuring fair compensation and safeguarding labor rights.

However, Chief Ogbonna reiterated his steadfast support for initiatives aimed at uplifting the lives of workers and ensuring their well-being remains a top priority for governments globally.

The statement reads:

This day holds profound significance as we honor the invaluable contributions of workers throughout history. Originating from the labor rights movement of the late 19th century, International Workers’ Day commemorates the historic struggles and achievements of workers in advocating for fair wages, humane working conditions, and social justice.

Workers are the backbone of society, driving progress, innovation, and economic development. Their dedication and perseverance lay the foundation for a thriving and equitable world. As we celebrate their contributions, let us also reflect on the ongoing challenges faced by workers, including income inequality, exploitation, and unsafe working conditions.

It is imperative that we prioritize the welfare and happiness of workers in all sectors, recognizing their fundamental rights and dignified livelihoods. Let us advocate for policies that uphold labor rights, promote inclusivity, and ensure fair treatment for all workers, regardless of their background or occupation.

Furthermore, on this significant occasion, I urge the Nigerian government, as well as state governors, to prioritize the timely payment of salaries, emoluments, pensions, gratuities, and other entitlements to workers. It is imperative that we honor our commitments to those who dedicate their lives to service, ensuring their financial security and well-being.

Let us stand united in advocating for policies and initiatives that foster a conducive environment for workers to thrive, including access to quality healthcare, affordable housing, and opportunities for professional growth and advancement. Together, let us build a society where every worker is empowered to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to our collective prosperity.
