Political turmoil erupts in Idemmili South Local Government Area as stakeholders vehemently oppose the reappointment of Hon. Amaka Obi as TC Chairman, following eight years of Awka Etiti’s dominance in local government leadership.

Stakeholders and community groups argue that Idemmili South comprises Akwu-Ukwu, Alor, Awka-Etiti, Ojoto, Nnokwa, Oba, and Nnobi, yet “Awka Etiti” alone has monopolized the chairman position for an uninterrupted eight-year period, contravening democratic principles and zoning arrangements.

Hon. Don Unachukwu, from Awka-Etiti, served as transition Chairman of Idemmili South from 2016 to 2022, before Hon. Amaka Obi, hailing from the same Awka-Etiti, assumed office in 2022. The reshuffle in local government leadership, by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, is expected to uphold equity and fairness in Idemmili South and accommodate other communities in the local government area. However, Hon. Amaka Obi’s apparent resistance to this directive and popular wish of both stakeholders and the people is viewed as detrimental to the APGA party’s interests.

Following a widespread protests and a vote of no confidence, youths have threatened to disrupt operations at the local government headquarters if the party, in collaboration with a select few, persists with the Awka-Etiti agenda.

Stakeholders advocate for power-sharing among other communities to ensure equity and fairness, while reaffirming their unwavering support for Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and the APGA party.

Hon. Amaka Obi’s tenure has been marked by a lack of alignment with the governor’s vision and manifesto, failing to attract new party members and perpetuating the Awka-Etiti agenda, which is seen as regressive for Idemmili South, she must take a bow following her outright rejection by the people. Vox populi!
