The presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called for greater accountability among political leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that politicians seeking public office must directly engage with Nigerians.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Rivers State, Obi warned that anyone who attempts to prevent votes from counting in 2027 should be held accountable.
Anybody who refuses to allow votes to count in 2027, the person must be counted as well. We have heard enough of these nonsense. All these threats must come to an end.”
The former Anambra State governor also criticised politicians who rely on surrogates to conduct campaigns on their behalf, saying candidates should personally go before the electorate and explain their programmes.
“Everybody that is contesting must go out and speak to the people, or they must be rejected,” Obi said.
He further argued that Nigerians deserve to understand the backgrounds of those seeking to lead the country, whether they reside in Nigeria or abroad.
Obi also spoke about the challenges Nigerians face when travelling abroad, linking the country’s international reputation to the need for better governance and reforms.
He expressed optimism that if Nigeria is successfully reformed, Nigerians would have fewer reasons to seek opportunities outside the country and would be more confident when applying for visas.
The NDC candidate also challenged anyone with allegations against him to come forward publicly, recalling his decision to take an individual to court after the person claimed to possess information that would shock the world.
