The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged improved policing and professional conduct during the 2027 general elections, assuring Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will apply lessons learned from previous polls to strengthen electoral security.
Disu gave the assurance in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while speaking with journalists after a meeting with officers of the state police command at the Officers’ Mess.
He said the police leadership was taking steps to address operational weaknesses identified during previous elections and improve the force’s preparedness for the forthcoming nationwide exercise.
According to the IGP, a recent conference involving commissioners of police and other senior officers provided an opportunity to assess the force’s performance in past elections and develop strategies to address identified shortcomings.
He expressed confidence that the experience gained from previous polls would help officers deliver better services and improve public confidence in the electoral process.
“We have had two or three elections recently, and you can see the police came out very well. We brought all this experience together, where we did well and where we did not do well, so that we will be able to perform better in this big election that everybody is looking up to,” Disu said.
He added, “I give you my word, the Nigerian police will do so well, and we will make the Nigerian Police proud and the nation proud.”
The police chief also directed officers in Rivers State to strengthen engagement with relevant stakeholders, remain accountable in the discharge of their duties and respond promptly to complaints from members of the public.
He explained that his interaction with personnel of the Rivers State Police Command was intended to review operational activities, address concerns and reinforce the importance of professionalism ahead of the 2027 elections.
Disu expressed satisfaction with the security situation in the state, commending the Commissioner of Police and other personnel for their efforts.
He said feedback from residents and community stakeholders suggested that security conditions in Rivers State had improved.
The IGP’s assurance comes as security agencies prepare for the 2027 general elections, with effective policing, public trust and the protection of voters expected to remain important considerations throughout the electoral process.
