Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has dismissed suggestions that Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election could weaken Peter Obi’s political standing in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.
Umeh stated this on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, insisting that Obi remains more popular than Soludo in Anambra State and across Nigeria.
According to the senator, the governor’s decision to back Tinubu rather than Obi would not significantly influence the voting choices of Anambra residents in the next presidential election.
“Today, no matter what Soludo does, Peter Obi will continue to be more popular than him, both in Nigeria and in Anambra State,” Umeh said.
He pointed to the 2023 general election as evidence of Obi’s political appeal in the South-East, recalling the former Anambra governor’s performance against candidates of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Umeh maintained that the political pattern witnessed in the South-East during the 2023 presidential election could be repeated in 2027, describing Obi as a major political figure in Anambra.
