The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed the confidence expressed by Senator Abdul’aziz Yari that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win re-election in 2027 and that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will remain in power beyond 2031.
Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, made the declaration on Sunday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, a day after he was unveiled as the Director-General of President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.
The campaign council is chaired by President Tinubu, with Vice-President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda serving as vice chairmen, while Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is the secretary.
Reacting to Yari’s remarks, the ADC leadership described the prediction as “wishful thinking,” arguing that it did not reflect the political realities in the country.
ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, said the APC and the Tinubu administration had yet to present a convincing message to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election.
The party’s national chairman was also quoted as saying that it was difficult for the ruling party to envisage victory when, according to him, it could not effectively communicate its achievements and plans to the electorate.
Similarly, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed Yari’s confidence, accusing those assuring President Tinubu of an easy victory of failing to give him an accurate assessment of the political situation.
“He’s one of those lying to President Tinubu. We understand he needs to justify his new appointment,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC spokesman drew a comparison with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which during its years in power famously projected that it would rule Nigeria for decades but was eventually defeated at the polls.
“We also recall that the PDP once boasted that it would rule Nigeria for 80 years. But what happened?” Abdullahi asked.
He further questioned the strength of the APC ahead of the 2027 election, arguing that political dominance should not be assumed simply because a party controls the federal government.
“At least, the PDP was a real political party, not this SPV,” he said.
The ADC maintained that the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election remains fluid and warned against taking electoral victory for granted.
With the major political parties already positioning themselves for the 2027 contest, the exchange between the ADC and the APC campaign leadership signals an increasingly heated political battle ahead of the election.
