Three decades after Nigeria’s historic gold medal victory at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has approved land allocations and street names in honour of state indigenes who were members of the gold-winning football team.
Among those set to benefit from the gesture are former Super Eagles stars Daniel Amokachi and Celestine Babayaro, who played key roles in Nigeria’s memorable Olympic triumph.
The decision by the Kaduna State Government comes 30 years after the historic achievement, which saw Nigeria become the first African country to win the Olympic men’s football gold medal.
Governor Uba Sani approved the allocation of plots of land and the naming of streets after the Kaduna-born members of the legendary team as recognition of their contribution to Nigerian football and their achievement on the international stage.
The 1996 Olympic football team, popularly known as the Dream Team, defeated Brazil in a dramatic semi-final before overcoming Argentina 3–2 in the final to secure the gold medal.
The recognition of Amokachi, Babayaro and other Kaduna State indigenes serves as a tribute to the players whose performances helped create one of the most celebrated moments in Nigerian sporting history.
