“Being in Benue is home away from home. You are not just corps members; you are now part of our community, and your safety is our responsibility.”
These were the reassuring words of the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, during the official declaration of the 2025 Batch B Stream I orientation course open at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area.
The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports Development and Creativity, Dr. Philip T Nongu, welcomed the 1000 newly sworn in corps members to the state and commended their willingness to serve. He acknowledged that arriving in a new environment can be overwhelming but urged them to settle in quickly and make the most of their experience.
He reminded them that the NYSC scheme remains one of the most important national institutions for integration and unity, and encouraged them to take full advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which he described as a gateway to economic self-reliance.
In her welcome remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Garba Veronica, ably represented by the Camp Director, Mr Edwin Oghanze, congratulated the corps members for their successful academic journey and safe arrival in camp. She urged them to participate actively in all camp activities, describing the orientation programme as the first and foundational phase of the service year.
“You will be stretched, no doubt. From parade ground drills to early morning meditations and the ever-competitive inter-platoon contests, you will learn, grow, and possibly realise that you are stronger than you thought,” she said with a humorous wink that earned a few knowing chuckles from the crowd.
Administering the oath of allegiance on behalf of the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon Justice Maurice Ikpambese, was Hon Justice Kume Tertsea Aorga. He charged the corps members to remain law abiding, disciplined, and dedicated throughout the service year.
The ceremony, graced by dignitaries, security operatives, NYSC officials, and enthusiastic observers, showcased a spirit of unity and youthful determination. It was a blend of seriousness and light-hearted camaraderie, the kind that NYSC camps are famously known for.
As the national anthem echoed across the camp and platoons marched with pride, it became clear that these young Nigerians were not just taking part in a programme, they were stepping into a legacy.
Highlights of the event included the Man O’ War drill, parade displays, and motivational sessions. Among those present were the Chairman of Tarka Local Government and heads of all collaborating agencies, whose presence added colour and encouragement to the ceremony.
