Angry protesters have broken into the nation’s parliament and set the building ablaze over a violent ban on social media platforms and government corruption.

“Hundreds have breached the parliament area and torched the main building,” said Ekram Giri, spokesman for the Parliament Secretariat.

Earlier, Nepal’s government lifted its ban on 26 prominent social media apps and messaging services after at least 19 people were killed and more than 200 were injured in the ongoing clashes that started on Monday.

On Monday, thousands of young Nepalese joined “Gen Z” protests across the country, which were triggered by the social media ban but also reflected wider frustrations at the government’s perceived lack of action to tackle corruption and boost economic opportunities.

Meanwhile, some ministers have started resigning from their political offices.
