Enugu Woman Charged With Criminal Defamation After False Rape Allegation Against Husband

Ozioma Okonkwo

The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 29-year-old woman, Chisom Okonkwo, before a Magistrate Court over allegations of criminal defamation and providing false information to law enforcement after falsely accusing her husband of raping and defiling their two daughters, aged five and three.

Court documents in Charge No. CnI…A/2025 show that Okonkwo was charged with two counts bordering on defamation and misleading the police.

According to the charge sheet, Okonkwo allegedly defamed her husband, Ozioma Okonkwo, in August 2024 at Adoration Junction, Emene, by publicly claiming he defiled their children, a statement the police said exposed him to “hatred, contempt, and ridicule.”

The second count alleges that on October 27, 2025, at the State Intelligence Department (SID) in Enugu, she knowingly provided false information to police detectives, which led to the arrest and detention of her husband. The act, the police stated, constituted an offence under Sections 323, 325, and 154(1)(a)(b) of the Criminal Code of Enugu State.

Police sources confirmed that medical examinations were conducted on the children following the wife’s allegation, and the results showed no evidence to support her claims. Investigators concluded that the accusation stemmed from a domestic misunderstanding between the couple.

Following the findings, the state police charged Chisom Okonkwo for criminal defamation and deceiving the police, while the husband initially arrested based on her complaint was cleared of wrongdoing.

The matter has been adjourned as the court continues proceedings.
