Nnamdi Kanu’s wife has publicly raised serious concerns regarding the conduct of Judge James Omotosho in her husband’s terrorism trial, questioning the legal propriety of the proceedings.
Speaking on the matter, she stated that in Nigeria, a judge cannot compel a defendant to enter a defense on terrorism-related charges without first reading out the written law under which the prosecution is acting. She emphasized the legal principle that “a person shall not be convicted for a criminal offense unless the offense is clearly defined.”
She accused Judge Omotosho of merely reading from a prepared script, noting: “Everyone could see and hear that he was reading a script handed to him, struggling to pronounce some of the words in his own written judgment.”
According to her, the judge ignored constitutional requirements, forcing Kanu to take a plea under a law he did not recognize a plea he reportedly refused. She further criticized the judge for refusing to issue proper written rulings on serious applications, claiming that he only read and counted thousands of lines without delivering substantive written judgments.
