The lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for a political resolution to the ongoing legal battle between the Federal Government and the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Kalu made the appeal while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he reacted to Kanu’s recent conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges.
According to the former Abia State governor, he has been in discussions with the Federal Government to explore non-judicial pathways toward addressing the long-running dispute involving the IPOB leader.
“The problem of Nnamdi Kanu is what we need to solve through a political process,” the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker said. “I have been working with the Federal Government of Nigeria on how to solve this issue, and nobody should question the decision of Justice Omotosho.”
He disclosed that while Kanu’s legal team is expected to approach the Court of Appeal to challenge the ruling, he intends to reach out to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to properly brief and advise President Bola Tinubu on possible next steps.
Kalu lamented the economic and human toll of IPOB’s activities in the South-East, saying the region has suffered significant job losses and disruptions to economic life. He added that dozens of Igbo people have been killed over the years as a result of violence linked to the proscribed organisation.
