Naomi Silekunola, wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), has announced her decision to end her marriage to the traditional ruler, marking the close of a three-year union.
In a detailed personal statement released on Thursday, Naomi expressed gratitude to God for sustaining her throughout the marriage, while confirming that she has chosen to move on and begin a new chapter in her life.
Addressing widespread speculation, she clarified that her decision was not influenced by the presence of other wives, stating that she was the only married wife throughout the duration of the marriage. She acknowledged the existence of “side attractions” but maintained that they were not the reason for her departure.
Naomi also dismissed claims that her marriage to the Ooni was spiritually arranged or facilitated by a prophetess, explaining that the monarch initiated the relationship and later introduced the cleric to her after she had agreed to marry him.
She further clarified long-standing rumours surrounding her personal life, noting that her son, Tadenikawo, is her first and only biological child, while the girl often referred to as her daughter is her niece.
According to her statement, efforts were made to sustain the marriage despite internal struggles, but she ultimately prioritised her role as a mother and her personal well-being.
“Today, I announce the beginning of a new dawn and the close of a chapter,” she said, declaring that she no longer wishes to be addressed as wife to the Ooni of Ife or Queen of Ile-Ife.
Naomi emphasised that religion was not a factor in the separation, referencing a previous interview in which she addressed related concerns. She concluded by affirming her focus on motherhood and personal growth as she moves forward.
