President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with the United Kingdom, expressing confidence that the friendship between both nations will continue to grow.

Tinubu made the remarks while delivering a speech at a State Banquet held in his honour at Windsor Castle on Wednesday during his ongoing state visit to the UK.

Addressing King Charles III, Queen Camilla and other distinguished guests, the Nigerian leader described the occasion as historic, noting that it was a profound honour to represent the people of Nigeria while reaffirming centuries-old ties of friendship, shared history and common values between the two countries.

Tinubu expressed appreciation for the warm reception extended to him, his wife Oluremi Tinubu and the Nigerian delegation, adding that standing at Windsor Castle — a symbol of British history and continuity — highlighted the enduring relationship between Nigeria and Britain.

The president reflected on Britain’s historical influence on democratic governance, referencing the legacy of the Magna Carta and the contributions of prominent thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Edmund Burke in shaping democratic ideals that continue to influence governance systems around the world.

He also acknowledged the impact of English literature and culture, mentioning writers like William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, whose works have contributed to the global spread of the English language.

According to Tinubu, Nigeria’s legal and institutional systems still reflect aspects of British traditions, including elements of English common law, parliamentary practices and civil service structures that have been adapted within Nigeria’s national framework.

The president also highlighted the role of Nigerians in the UK, describing the Nigerian community as one of the most dynamic diaspora groups contributing significantly to British society, particularly within the National Health Service.

He cited prominent sports figures of Nigerian heritage such as Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Anthony Joshua as examples of the strong human connection linking both countries.

Tinubu further emphasised the importance of cooperation through the Commonwealth of Nations and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working with the UK to address security challenges, particularly terrorism threats affecting West Africa and the Sahel region.

The president noted that Nigeria remains optimistic about the future, describing the country as a nation filled with resilient people, ambitious youth and entrepreneurs determined to unlock their full potential.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to the UK for its support to Nigerians during the era of military rule, recalling that he personally found refuge in Britain during the pro-democracy struggle.

Tinubu ended his address by inviting guests to raise a toast to the enduring friendship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom and to a shared future of deeper partnership and cooperation.
