The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has debunked claims circulating on social media alleging that its personnel opened fire on members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at its headquarters in Garki II.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the Command described the reports as “false and misleading,” noting that they were intended to incite public unrest.
According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of March 23, 2026, when a distress call was received around 7:00 a.m. reporting that a large group of about 300 individuals had stormed the NURTW headquarters located along Sapele Street. The group was said to be armed with dangerous weapons including cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, and had begun removing items from the premises.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Isyaku Sharu, led a rapid response team to the scene. Preliminary findings revealed that the group was attempting to enforce a court order without the presence of authorized court officials such as sheriffs.
The situation quickly escalated into violence when opposing NURTW members resisted the action. During the clash, one individual sustained severe machete injuries to the neck and was rescued by police officers. Several others who suffered injuries were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police confirmed the arrest of seven suspects at the scene, including Sulaiman A. Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi, and Ibikunle T. Baruwa. The suspects have since been charged before Magistrate Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2.
The FCT Police Command stated that normalcy has been restored to the area and reassured residents of its commitment to maintaining law and order. Authorities also urged members of the public to provide timely information through designated emergency lines to support ongoing security efforts.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on behalf of the Command.
