The Abba Kabir Yusuf‑led government in Kano State has announced that it has disbursed ₦32 billion out of a ₦48 billion backlog in unpaid gratuity and death benefits owed to retirees and families of deceased civil servants.
Governor Yusuf made the disclosure as he flagged off the sixth tranche of payments, which included another ₦5 billion release.
He explained that when his administration assumed office in May 2023, it inherited a large backlog of unpaid benefits from the previous government, and has since been working to clear it. With the latest tranche, the total paid so far now stands at ₦32 billion.
In his remarks, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to settling the remaining ₦16 billion owed before the end of the year, saying the payments would help alleviate hardship for retirees and their families. He also thanked the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for their patience through the process.
Many pensioners expressed gratitude for the disbursements, with some vowing continued support for the governor’s leadership.
