Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over Nigeria’s development, warning that the country is falling behind in key areas despite years of democratic governance.

Obi made the remarks while attending the launch of a landmark report by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation titled “Strengthening the Nexus Between Democracy and Economic Growth in Nigeria.”

Speaking after the event, he said discussions and findings from the report revealed that Nigeria has struggled in critical sectors such as health, education, and poverty reduction, while the economic well-being of citizens continues to decline.

According to him, participants at the event reached a consensus that Nigeria’s leadership recruitment process must be reformed, emphasizing that future leaders should emerge based on competence, capacity, character, compassion, and commitment to service.

He also stressed the importance of strong, independent, and accountable institutions, noting that rebuilding public trust and restoring discipline in leadership are essential for democracy to thrive.

Obi added that governance must begin to translate into measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians, expressing optimism that positive change is still achievable.
