Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted to reports of an accidental airstrike at Jilli Market in the Borno–Yobe border area, describing the incident as a tragic wake-up call for Nigeria’s defence strategy.
In a statement issued on Monday, Obi expressed deep sorrow over the reported deaths of innocent civilians affected by the airstrike. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the governments and people of Borno State and Yobe State, praying for comfort for those grieving and eternal rest for the deceased.
The former Anambra State governor noted that he had refrained from drawing conclusions, citing the lack of clear details surrounding the incident, including the exact sequence of events and confirmed casualty figures.
However, he emphasized that such tragedies are often linked to operational challenges, poor coordination, and limitations in military equipment, including ageing platforms. Obi recalled that similar incidents have occurred in the past, stressing the need for urgent reforms.
He called for increased investment in modern fighter jets, the upgrading of existing military platforms, and continuous training and retraining of personnel to enhance operational efficiency and reduce the risk of civilian casualties.
Obi also urged Nigerians to remain supportive of the armed forces, acknowledging their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation despite difficult conditions. At the same time, he insisted that military personnel must be adequately equipped and supported to carry out their duties effectively.
Addressing the broader security situation, Obi called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rise to the challenge of national security, stressing the need for decisive leadership, improved coordination among security agencies, and sustained investment in modern defence capabilities.
He warned that without urgent action, Nigeria risks continued loss of innocent lives amid worsening insecurity.
