Veteran Nollywood actor, Nze Ukwu Ugezu J. Ugezu, has defended the education record of former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, arguing that criticisms over his failure to build new schools while in office are misleading.
In a statement shared on social media, Ugezu said Anambra already had an extensive network of community primary and secondary schools across the state, insisting that the major challenge during Obi’s administration was the poor condition of existing facilities rather than a shortage of schools.
According to the actor, Obi chose to rehabilitate dilapidated school buildings and construct additional classroom blocks in areas where student populations had outgrown available facilities instead of embarking on widespread construction of new schools.
Ugezu described the approach as an example of responsible leadership, arguing that restoring existing public infrastructure delivered greater value than pursuing new projects primarily for political visibility.
He further claimed that many politicians abandon existing public assets in favour of new projects because they present greater opportunities for inflated contracts and financial mismanagement. According to him, Obi departed from that model by prioritising public interest over political optics.
The actor maintained that effective leadership should be judged by its impact on citizens rather than the number of newly commissioned projects, adding that political debates should be based on facts rather than what he described as manufactured narratives surrounding Obi’s tenure.
