Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed that iconic music duo P-Square played a major role in inspiring his musical journey and shaping his belief that African artistes could achieve global success.
Speaking in a recent interview with the BBC, the singer recalled proudly telling his schoolmates about Peter and Paul Okoye, describing the duo as a powerful example of African musicians breaking into the international music scene.
Davido said P-Square’s international collaborations and relationships with renowned global stars strengthened his conviction that African artistes could compete successfully on the world stage.
“P-Square inspired me. I used to tell my friends in school about how they were two African artistes who had a song with Snoop Dogg and were friends with Kanye West,” he said.
The ‘Unavailable’ hitmaker noted that witnessing P-Square break international barriers motivated a generation of young Nigerian musicians, including himself, to dream beyond Africa and pursue global recognition.
P-Square, comprising twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, remain among Africa’s most influential music acts. Their success and international visibility helped lay important foundations for the global growth of Afrobeats, inspiring artistes such as Davido, Wizkid, Rema and many others.
