The Kaduna State Government has increased the salaries and allowances of traditional rulers across the state as part of measures to strengthen grassroots governance, intelligence gathering and community security.
Governor Uba Sani approved the upward review for emirs, chiefs, district heads and village heads across Kaduna’s three senatorial districts.
In addition to the improved remuneration, the governor approved monthly security allowances for all 35 emirates and chiefdoms in the state, with the payment taking effect from September 1.
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement, quoting the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Sadiq Mamman Lagos.
According to the state government, the new security allowance is designed to give traditional institutions greater capacity to support security agencies through grassroots intelligence and early detection of potential threats.
The administration believes traditional rulers are strategically positioned to identify security challenges within their communities because of their close relationship with residents.
The government therefore expects the increased financial support to translate into greater involvement by traditional institutions in maintaining peace, resolving disputes and promoting cooperation among communities.
The state government also called on traditional rulers to intensify efforts toward peaceful coexistence among Kaduna’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.
It urged residents to work with traditional institutions and security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could help prevent crime and protect lives and property.
