American humanitarian Alex Barbir has criticised the Redeemed Christian Church of God and its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, over an alleged 265,000 dollar donation to the Nigerian Federal Government.
Barbir questioned the decision to donate the funds to the government, arguing that the money could have been channelled towards supporting vulnerable Nigerians and communities affected by violence and displacement.
In a statement, the humanitarian expressed concern over the economic hardship facing many Nigerians, particularly low income workers and members of religious communities who contribute financially to churches through offerings and tithes.
He argued that churches should prioritise humanitarian interventions, including rebuilding communities affected by attacks, providing homes for displaced families and assisting people living in extreme poverty.
Barbir also questioned the extent of RCCG involvement in rebuilding communities affected by insecurity, asking how many villages the church had helped reconstruct.
He further criticised what he described as the church maintaining close relations with government authorities while Nigerians continue to face insecurity and hardship.
